West Oxfordshire District Council is aware of the commitment and enthusiasm from
residents to recycle. Recycling green waste is no exception because as it decomposes
in landfill sites methane gas is produced as a by-product which, of course, contributes
to global warming.
Current options for recycling green waste are:
- Home composting – this is the best environmental option. For most people it is convenient
and it is also inexpensive as discounted bins can be purchased. To find out more
about composting and discounted bins visit the Council’s website: www.westoxon.gov.uk
or telephone Recycle Now on 0845 0770757.
- Chargeable Green Waste Scheme - for £33 per year the Council provides a fortnightly
collection service. Because of its popularity it is currently fully subscribed, but
anyone interested can add their name to the waiting list for April 2009 – simply
telephone 01993 861040.
- Waste Recycling Centres –green waste can be taken to these centres. The nearest Centre
to Tackley are Ardley Fields, Brackley Road, Ardley and Dean Pit, Chadlington.
However, with regard to the options above, the Council’s policy is that if green
waste cannot be composted at home, or taken efficiently to a disposal site, it can
be put into the household’s own residual waste wheelie bins.
Future options for recycling green waste are:
- Currently we are reviewing our waste collection services as the contract with our
suppliers Veolia Environmental Services, expires in October 2010. Part of the consideration
for the new contract will be a free green waste collection service to all households
in West Oxfordshire. At the earliest this would be October 2010.
- Currently there are 23 Community Action Groups (CAGs) in Oxfordshire run by volunteers
who promote the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste in their local communities.
Most of these groups organise regular community green waste collections. If anyone
is interested in setting up such a group in Tackley, contact: Simon Kenton on 07793
647910 or visit www.cagoxfordshire.org.uk
We are keen to keep green waste out of landfill and are objectives with regard to
household waste continue to be to reduce the total levels of waste created, and increase
levels of reuse and recycling.
